What is Yoga Nidra?

Learn more about this blissful modality that heals and transforms through deep relaxation

Yoga Nidra, or yogic sleep, is an ancient practice of conscious rest to deeply relax the body and mind by moving through varying brain wave patterns. This unique meditative practice takes you through different brain wave patterns and non-REM sleep stages to put the body to sleep while the mind stays awake. By moving through these different sleep stages, you will reach a deeper state of relaxation where the body is asleep, but the mind is awake to steep a positive intention, connect with the soul space and restore the mind and body.

Commonly used as a relaxation or manifestation practice, it is one of the purest forms of pratyahara (withdrawal of the senses), which is one of the 8 limbs of yoga.

Stages of Yoga Nidra

  1. Physical Body Awareness

  2. Breath Awareness

  3. Emotional Awareness

  4. Intellect Awareness

  5. Divine True Self Connection

  6. Complete release of the Self

The first 5 stages represents a kosha, or sheath of our being. As you move through each stage, your brain wave patterns shift from wake to rest and you move closer to the subtle body where the truest, most authentic Self resides in pure consciousness. Here is where we root a positive intention for manifestation.

Then, we will go through a mindful journey through your koshas ("sheaths of being") to reach a place of inner bliss to engrain the intention you created. All you have to do is find a comfortable spot to lay down and listen to the sound of my voice. To allow the body to fully relax, you may want to have on hand extra pillows and props.
