What your moon sign says about how you self-regulate.
In astrology, the moon represents our inner world, our emotions and our most internal selves.
The sign your moon is in reflects who you are when no one is around. Knowing your moon sign is so crucial to understand how you self-regulate and your unique flavor of wellness.
The sign of your moon, one or the MOST personal planets in your chart, reveals so much about your daily self-soothing strategy. After experimenting with this myself, guiding clients in readings and observing the people in my life with their moon sign, I’ve come to the conclusion that…
Your wellness strategy through the style of your moon sign actually works for you on the soul level
The moon is often referred to in astrology as “The Mother”. A planetary luminary ruling the nurturing sign “Cancer” (the mother of the zodiac) that clues us in on how our natal moon is connected to our own way of self-nurturing. Sometimes, parental figures who are supposed to care for us may not have been equipped to support us in this way.
In the wellness world there are many ways to self-regulate: yoga, meditation, vagus nerve practices, nutrition, exercise, breath work, somatic practices, sound healing, infrared therapy, Reiki, massage, sauna, ice bath, talk therapy, silent retreats, floating chambers…the list could literally go on forever…there are so many nourishing healing options out there! In a beautifully evolving society where well-being is becoming a lifestyle priority, all of these choices can feel overwhelming to know where to start your journey.
That’s why I love using the moon sign as your wellness starting point
As a yoga and meditation teacher within the wellness space and a passionate explorer of various wellness modalities for the past half decade, I’ve come to bridge the connection between astrology and my self-care style.
There have been some wellness practices I dropped because they just were not supportive or sustainable at that moment and that’s OKAY. To nurture yourself, you don’t have to do ALL the things. It’s about being intention with the things that feel good to YOU and only you can know that — not the Instagram or email ads piling onto your phones with feel-good solutions.
Self regulating through your moon sign’s element and modality
I love viewing astrology at its most basic lens through two properties:
Element - fire, earth, air, water
Modality - cardinal, fixed, mutable
Because while they are so minimal, you get the vibe of a sign through those two characterizations without having to memorize the nuances of your sign right off the bat (though this deeper exploration is so worth it). Each of the 12 signs has a different combination of element and modality: 4 elements * 3 modalities = 12 signs!
In my readings I always make it a point to understand your composition of elements in your natal chart cause that also speaks to where you may need more balance in your life. For example, people with lots of water placements may look to the qualities of earth signs for balance.
Element
Fire Moons
Moons in the fire signs of Aries, Leo or Sagittarius will feel called to a wellness strategy that feeds their inner fire. Think cardio, exercise, HIIT, hiking or adrenaline adventures. On a non-physical plane, these signs need freedom and vitality for life to feel emotionally safe. The urge to take action and spark others through their exuberant inner world is going to play a big part of their daily lifestyles. Honoring alone time with the “go go go” tendencies of these moons will be important.
Earth Moons
Moons in the earth signs of Taurus, Virgo or Capricorn will regulate best through the physical and tangible. From enjoying the material realm through the physical senses (like luxuriating in a hearty meal) or creating that material realm themselves through pushing the needle on their goals for this earthly world. Being resourceful, grounded, and generative and honoring that need daily will help these moons feel stable & consistent in a world that is always changing around them.
Air Moons
Moons in the air signs of Gemini, Libra or Aquarius will nurture themselves daily through sharing and developing ideas. Social interactions, philosophizing, conversing, exchanging concepts and being in community will bring a sense of safety to these often mentally heavy signs. With a penchant for over-thinking, these beautiful minds need a break by turning to their body and conversing with that wisdom within. Self-regulating by honoring both their need for social expansion and internal “heart-storming” and brainstorming will be a daily balancing act.
Water Moons
Moons in the water signs of Cancer, Scorpio or Pisces will regulate by tapping into their deep well of emotions on a daily basis. Self soothing may look like an outward pouring of those emotions or recognizing the internal existence of them to inspire their creativity and intuition. Working on releasing the grudges of the heart is a challenge these moons may face daily. Nurturing themselves with their favorite feel-good recipes, tv shows, music, crafts & creative pursuits or offering that level of thoughtful care to their loved ones will feel extremely nourishing. Honoring the ebbs and flows of their inner universe with the daily routine of life will be a crucial part to self-regulating.
Modality
Your moon can be one of these 3 modalities — Cardinal, Fixed, or Mutable — which is how the zodiac sign functions. Think cardinal signs start a season, fixed signs sustain a season and mutable signs change from one season to another. A recent connection I made from these modalities are to the Hindu Gods in yogic teachings. Brahma is the god of the birth and creation, initiating life (Cardinal), Vishnu is the god of preservation, sustaining life (fixed) and Shiva is the god of destruction, adapting life (mutable).
Cardinal Moons
Moons with a cardinal modality are Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn. They may feel more in charge of their emotions but at the same time, your inner world could be pulling you in different directions that are out of your control. As the leaders of the zodiac, they may often feel like they need to put on a front that they’re “fine” to hold space for others emotions before their own. Feeling safe on daily basis may look like recognizing which emotions are truly theirs then using that energy to get ahead in an area of their life, or initiating forward on an internal or external milestone. Taking the lead or self-starting will play a large role in your self-regulating strategy.
Fixed Moons
Moons with a fixed modality are Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius. Understanding their internal emotions may be difficult earlier on in life because of the fixed nature of these signs. Emotions may be harder to reveal at the surface level but they do still experience deeper cuts of the emotional fabric just as anyone else. They may have a depth of feeling that often isn’t experienced by others and tapping into this well may feel like picking at ice sometimes. Self regulating involves taking emotional stock of their daily life and surrendering to vulnerability because they aren’t fully immune to being sensitive.
Mutable Moons
Moons with a mutable modality are Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. Their inner world flows freely with their adaptable qualities. They may be more aware of their emotions once they accidentally leak from their subconscious and surface to the external world in various forms (i.e. speech, art, action). While their inner anchoring may be fickle even on an hourly basis, self-regulating may involve allowing more fluidity in their daily life. With an ever-shifting inner landscape, leaning on trusted friends or practices to freely share how they are feeling in each moment will be important to churn through their psyche and move on to better things.
